We’re celebrating Trustees Week and here at Andover Mind HQ we thought it would be a good opportunity to introduce you to some of the trustees that help govern our charity.

The theme this year is making a difference in changing times; as our external environment continues to change, we face new challenges. The positive impact trustees make at Andover Mind is invaluable to our organisation that is now as important as ever to benefit society.

James Brown is an Army Reserve veteran and co-founder of a technology company supporting people who receive care to maintain their independence. He has been a Trustee for Andover Mind since March 2022, joining the finance, risk and assurance sub-committee and taking ownership of developing a 5 year financial view in conjunction with the strategy sub-committee.

What attracted you to the opportunity of being a trustee for Andover Mind?
I was seeking exposure to a different sector to my day-job and I’ve always enjoyed volunteering and supporting my local community. Andover Mind is providing vital mental health services across Hampshire and as a trustee of Andover Mind, I also benefit from the wider National Mind community which provides an opportunity to learn and work with other trustees across the UK.

What do you like the most about being a trustee for Andover Mind?
Being able to use my skills to support an organisation and work with a great team.Andover Mind has been through a period of growth as it scales to deliver the increasing demand for primary care, wellbeing, carer support and dementia advice services across Hampshire. We’re in a strong place, but it’s a great opportunity to broaden my corporate governance skillset.

What do you bring to the role of trustee?
In my day-job, I’m a co-founder of a company that aims to use technology to support people who receive care to maintain their independence. I also volunteer as a youth leader with the local Army Cadet Force where I’m lucky to work with a great team to provide fun, challenging and safe training for young people.

Do you have lived experience?
As an Army Reserve veteran and someone who volunteers with young people, I’m conscious of the significance and importance of the role leadership plays in building a culture where people can talk about their mental health and receive appropriate support.

What do you do to take care of your own mental health?
I get a lot of energy and perspective from running as it gives me the opportunity to reflect and reframe the challenges of the day. I also enjoy yoga and spending time with my family and friends.

Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?
I’ve recently got into astronomy and am now enjoying the longer nights to get some great shots, weather depending!
