Young adult carers experience poorer mental wellbeing than the general population, with 1 in 3 young carers living with a mental health issue.

Young people with caring responsibilities are more likely to report worse health outcomes for themselves than those who don’t provide care, as they have less individual time to focus on their own health and wellbeing. We want to change that.

We are working with Hampshire County Council and the NHS Trust to deliver a new group for young adult carers at Andover Mind.

This new group, in collaboration with our Be You service, will be launching on Saturday 13 May 1.30-2.30pm, at the Andover Mind Wellbeing Centre, and will be open to anyone aged 16-25 who provides regular or on-going unpaid care and emotional support to an adult family member who has a disability, illness, poor mental health and/or alcohol or drug abuse problems.

The first session will be an opportunity for young adult carers to meet each others in a similar position and share their experiences, enjoy some free food and soft drinks, whilst also giving feedback on what they would like the future sessions to look like such as walk and talks, cookery classes, art and craft activities, pet therapy sessions, music and more!

Going forward, the group will take place on the 2nd Saturday of each month and will be a safe space to hang out with other young carers, with our mental health team and carer support advisors on hand to lend a listening ear, providing advice, information and signposting.

This group will operate on a drop-in basis, so there’s no need to book, just come along and meet the team, but if you would like to speak to someone before the event, you can give us a call on 01264 332297 or email enquiries@andovermind.org.uk
