Andover Mind’s involvement in Winchester Green Week 2024 proved to be an inspiring success, thanks to our collaboration with Leigh Johnstone, also known as The Beardy Gardener. The events held at the Garden for Mind at Longstock Park Nursery, on the John Lewis-owned Leckford Estate, provided attendees with an escape into nature, where the connection between mental health and green therapy came to life.

Over the course of two days, visitors experienced a wide range of free workshops designed to highlight the therapeutic benefits of gardening. Led by Leigh and Libby Hilling, the sessions catered to gardeners of all ages and skill levels. From practical activities like spring bulb planting and border design to talks on cultivating a garden for wellbeing, attendees left with a renewed appreciation for how nature can support mental health.

One of the standout moments of the event was the emotional talk titled “how gardening saved my life.” Both Leigh and Libby shared personal stories of their struggles with mental health and the comfort they found in gardening. Their honesty and vulnerability proved that opening up important conversations about how nature can be a source of healing and renewal is integral to our wellbeing.

A guided wellbeing walk around the garden was a highlight of the event. Visitors had the opportunity to take in the peaceful surroundings of the Garden for Mind, designed to encourage mindfulness and reflection. It was a perfect reminder of the calming and restorative power of nature proving gardening is not only good for the environment but also for the mind.

As we move forward, it’s clear that our Garden for Mind and the events we can hold there will leave a lasting impact. By encouraging attendees to embrace green therapy and sustainable living, we hope to foster a healthier, more mindful community. Here’s to growing greener and healthier together!
