As a service user of Andover Mind, Dan has developed his skills and now runs a creative writing group at the Andover Wellbeing Centre. Dan is a true representation of how the work we do, filters down into the community and improves the lives of local people.
Dan tells us about his creative writing group and plans for the future.
“Since I first started facilitating this group I have noticed a buzz around it. The core people who return the group most Thursdays have gained confidence in their use of language which is great to see.
A group attendee told me that they have been inspired by the exercises I have created. This has inspired me and increased my confidence.
When they started, some people couldn’t construct a sentence, but through hard work they have moved forward in expressing themselves through the written word.
Some have been writing poetry and other forms of writing for a while and use the group to hone their writing skills.
One of the exercises was about writers’ voices, speaking in an individual’s tone and distinct style. My aim is forI those who attend the group, to be able to develop their own writing style.
Moving forward I would like to look into guest speakers and diversify the range of writing styles and ideas.”
