The Aldershot Safe Haven, operated jointly by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Andover Mind, and Catalyst, marks its 10th anniversary this month. The out-of-hours crisis support centre exists as an alternative to A&E, providing crucial mental health support in a quiet, calm and non-clinical environment.
Since opening its doors in 2014, the Aldershot Safe Haven has helped over 14,000 people, averaging around 100 individuals per month. The people who have used the service come seeking assistance with a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, and more.
“Our mission at the Aldershot Safe Haven has always been to offer a safe and supportive environment for individuals experiencing mental health crises,” said Helen Mothersole, Head of wellbeing services at Andover Mind. “Over the past decade, we’ve witnessed countless success stories and have been privileged to play a role in the journey toward recovery and resilience.”
The support provided by the Aldershot Safe Haven extends beyond crisis intervention. Through compassionate care and personalised assistance, many service users have been empowered to access preventative measures, thereby averting potential crises. For those requiring more intensive support, the centre has facilitated necessary interventions, including the provision of resources and referrals to appropriate services.
Reflecting on his experience with the Aldershot Safe Haven, service user Iain Barratt-Watkins shared, “The Safe Haven has been a lifeline for me, providing a safe space to offload and connect with others who understand. It’s not just a service; it’s a community that has helped me navigate some of my darkest moments and find hope for the future.”
Throughout its tenure, the Aldershot Safe Haven has undergone several changes, including three moves to different buildings, all seamlessly executed to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. Even amidst the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the dedicated staff persevered, adapting their operations to continue offering a 365-day service whenever possible.
“I am immensely proud of the dedication and resilience demonstrated by our staff over the past decade,” remarked Helen Mothersole, “Their unwavering commitment to supporting those in crisis has undoubtedly made a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals and families.”
