Free youth counselling support for young people

How we can help

Everyone feels down sometimes but talking can really help. If you are aged 11-23 and  live in Andover or the surrounding areas, then we can offer you a free counselling service.

What is counselling?

Counselling is a type of talking therapy which aims to help you understand your thoughts and feelings. It offers a non-judgemental space where you will be listened to. The counsellor will try to see things from your point of view, while providing support to help you find your own answers. Getting the chance to talk through your worries and problems with somebody can help you see things in a different light and help you find ways to help yourself.

What sort of things can I talk about?

At counselling you can talk about anything that’s worrying you; this could be:

  •         feeling low, unhappy or lonely
  •         depression and/or anxiety
  •         bullying or abuse
  •         family or relationship issues
  •         grief and bereavement
  •         sexuality or gender
  •         self-harm
  •         suicidal thoughts and feelings
  •         pregnancy
  •         drugs

Whatever is troubling you, counselling can help you to understand yourself better and enable you to develop better coping mechanisms.

Will everything I say be confidential?

Everything you discuss with the counsellor is said in complete confidence. There are however certain times when we may need to share information with someone else without asking you first. This would only happen if we felt you or someone else was at genuine risk of abuse or harm or there was a threat/risk to life or safety. Also, if we became aware of a crime or potential crime then we would need to report it.

Where will the counselling sessions take place?

Sessions can be held in your school if it’s local, or at the well-being Centre in Andover. You will meet the counsellor once a week for a set amount of time of up to 50 minutes.

Who will I speak to?

You will meet with one of our fully trained and qualified counsellors. All our counsellors receive professional supervision in line with BACP’s (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) Ethical Framework for Good Practise in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

How many sessions will I have?

We offer you six sessions of counselling initially, with the option to extend to 12 should we feel it beneficial and should you agree. This will be decided upon at the fourth session.
