NEW… Dementia Advice Service
Our aim is to help those newly diagnosed with dementia, to live their lives as well as possible for as long as possible.
In January 2010, we will be launching a major new service at Andover Mind.
The Dementia Advice Service is part of the Government’s pilot scheme to help people with dementia and their carers to get the appropriate support from first diagnosis and throughout their illness. There are 22 pilot sites around the country where Dementia Advisers are being employed to guide sufferers and their carers through the care and support systems available to them. Andover Mind is working in partnership with Hampshire County Council to provide this service.
Why is the service important?
The Department of Health’s National Dementia Strategy aims to increase awareness of dementia, ensure early diagnosis and intervention and radically improve the quality of care that people with the condition receive. Currently only a third of people with dementia receive a formal diagnosis or have contact with specialist services throughout their illness.
How do I get a referral to the Dementia Advice Service?
Referrals to the service may come from GP’s, Community Mental Health teams, other health and social care professionals or from self-referral.
The main aims are:
- To provide a quality information and signposting service which is tailored to individual need.
- To empower individuals to access the information they need; promoting independence, self help, choice, control and well-being.
- To collaborate with other health and care professionals to get the best possible outcome for people with dementia.
- To be accessible to all.
The service will operate from Andover Mind’s resource centre in Westbrook Close as well as other community locations
